On October 31, 2025, former head of the State Fiscal Service Roman Nasirov finished delivering his final statement in the case concerning his alleged involvement in Oleksandr Onyshchenko’s “gas scheme.”
In addition to his nearly 10-hour-long final word, Nasirov submitted a motion to return to the stage of evidence examination, which the court had completed almost a year earlier. He argued that the court had not yet reviewed all the necessary documents recently discovered by the defense and had not questioned key witnesses.
The court rejected the motion, noting that the defense could have presented this evidence earlier. Observers noted the motion appeared to be another attempt to delay the proceedings, as granting it at the final statement stage could have set the case back by at least a year, effectively jeopardizing the trial, given that the statute of limitations expires in April 2026.
At the same hearing, Nasirov’s long-time lawyer, Kostiantyn Doroshenko, returned to his defense team, a month after the defendant had unexpectedly terminated his contract.
The court has now retired to the chambers to issue the verdict, awaited for eight years since the case first entered the courts.
